The city of Split, owing to its historical stratification has become a real attraction to numerous visitors. The most prominent part of its cultural heritage definitely belongs to a late Roman building, the unique palace of Roman emperor Diocletian, who had it extravagantly built both as the symbol of his rule (284-304) and as his residence where he was to spend the last years of his life after the abdication in 305.
